One of the finest storytellers in the game for the best part of 20 years now, it was only a matter of time before Craig Finn, the Boston-born frontman of The Hold Steady, finally bestowed upon us a full cinematic experience, and with the Kris Merc directed video for ‘God In Chicago‘, he has done exactly that.
Taken from the great man’s excellent forthcoming album We All Want The Same Things (named, incidentally, after a lyric in this very song), ‘God In Chicago‘ tells the tale of two youngsters sharing rather sombre circumstances, and embarking on a road trip as a means of coming to terms with tragic loss and its consequences. Our chief female protagonist has clearly suffered the death of a brother long before his time, and this journey is a chance to heal wounds, even though we are somehow aware that these two characters, upon their return, may never see each other again, despite the deep bonds they formed on their odyssey.
This is a beautifully lit, impossibly romantic video with a haunting, mostly spoken word narrative. If you don’t well up, I suggest you go buy yourself a soul.
We All Want The Same Things is released on 24th March through Partisan.
