GIITTV: Track Of The Day #999: Colin Stetson – In The Clinches

After last year’s take on Henryk Gorecki‘s ‘Symphony of Sorrowful Song’, which saw Colin Stetson take on a sound akin to Japanese post-rock quartet Mono at their most listless, here the celebrated Canadian saxophonist returns to what he is best at with what is perhaps his most intense work to date.

Prefacing the release of his latest album, All This I Do For Glory, on the 28th of April, ‘In The Clinches’ is a trademark rhythmic, cyclical manipulation of the instrument that he both takes to new heights and takes to new places, with a foot in jazz and a foot in hard rock. It has a similar tone to the work of fellow Canadians Hangedup, or for those outside of the dozen people who have heard them, it can be loosely compared to recent Mercury Music Prize nominees The Comet Is Coming, though ‘In The Clinches’ is much more hard-edged and raw.
